Ich habe eine Playlist erstellt (auf Spotify: Vilnius 2021), die die Lieder enthält, die mich in meinem ersten Semester in Vilnius begleitet haben:

I created a playlist (on Spotify: Vilnius 2021) containing the songs that accompanied me during my first semester in Vilnius:

1. Las cosas se me olvidan – Despistaos
Dieses Lied wird mich immer an die Anfangszeit und meine spanische Zimmergenossin erinnern. Sie hat es am Anfang hoch und runter gespielt, im Zimmer, im Bad, in der Küche – und damit für gute Laune gesorgt.

This song will always remind me of the early days and my Spanish roommate. She played it up and down in the beginning, in the room, in the bathroom, in the kitchen – and put us in a good mood.

2. Dancing Queen – ABBA
Wer hätte gedacht, dass mir dieses Lied im Ausland nach so vielen Jahren so oft begegnen würde? Es wurde auf jeder der beiden Karaokepartys, die ich besuchte, gesungen und manchmal lief es auch im Nachbarzimmer …

Who would have thought that I would come across this song so often abroad after so many years? It was sung at each of the two karaoke parties I attended and sometimes it was playing in the next room …

3. Don’t Stop Me Now – Queen
Ich habe mich riesig gefreut, als die riesige Erasmusstudentin mit den ausgefallenen Kleidern (und an dem Abend blauen Haaren) dieses Lied auf der ersten Karaokeparty gesungen hat. Als ich 15 war, war es eins meiner Lieblingslieder – damals hätte ich mir nicht zu träumen vermocht, einmal in der Disco dazu zu tanzen.

I was so happy when the huge Erasmus student with the fancy dresses (and blue hair that night) sang this song at the first karaoke party. When I was 15, it was one of my favourite songs – back then, I would never have dreamed of dancing to it at the disco.

4. I Want To Break Free – Queen
Auch das Lied hat meine Zimmergenossin gehört. Zuerst passte es zu der neuen Freiheit, später zur Quarantäne und dann wieder zur Freiheit.

My roommate also heard the song. First it went with the new freedom, later with quarantine and then with freedom again.

5. To Let Go – Jozy
Wenn man jemanden vermisst, weil man an einen anderen Ort gegangen ist, um seinen Horizont zu erweitern, entfaltet dieses Lied eine heilsame Wirkung. Zumindest für mich.

When you miss someone because you have gone to another place to broaden your horizons, this song has a healing effect. At least for me.

6. Soul Mate – flora cash
Mit Sehnsucht entdeckt und gehört.

7. Dance Me To The End Of Love – Madeleine Peyroux
Lief bei meinem ersten Besuch im Katzencafé. So klingt die Atmosphäre dort.

Played on my first visit to the Cat Café. That’s what the atmosphere sounds like there.

8. I WANNA BE YOUR SLAVE – Måneskin
An einem grauen Tag bin ich mit hochgezogener Kapuze durch die Straßen gelaufen und habe den Song in Dauerschleife gehört. Yeah.

On a grey day I walked through the streets with my hood up and listened to the song on continuous loop. Yeah.

9. When I Kissed The Teacher – Lily James, Jessica Keenan Wynn, Alexa Davies & Celia Imrie
Ich war begeistert, als meine Mitbewohnerin zuerst mein Lieblingslied aus dem zweiten Mamma Mia Film hörte und dann…

11. Society – Eddie Vedder
Was für ein Zufall! Unglaublich, wie sehr der Musikgeschmack meiner Zimmergenossin im Hinblick auf diese drei Lieder mit meinem übereinstimmt. In „Society“ aus dem Film „Into the Wild“ geht es um einen Aussteiger. Ein Auslandssemester fühlt sich manchmal ein bisschen wie Aussteigen an.

What a coincidence! It’s incredible how much my roommate’s taste in music matches mine with regard to these three songs. Society“ from the film „Into the Wild“ is about a dropout. A semester abroad sometimes feels a bit like dropping out.

12. Guaranteed – Eddie Vedder
Mein Lieblingslied aus „Into the Wild“. Lange habe ich dieses Lied gehört und von Freiheit geträumt, davon, ins Ausland zu gehen. Viele Verse sind für mich wahrgeworden.

My favourite song from „Into the Wild“. For a long time I listened to this song and dreamed of freedom, of going abroad. Many verses have come true for me.

13. Sparrow – Big Thief
Für mich schwingt auch in diesem Lied Freiheit mit (auch wenn es darum geht, wie Eva schlangengeleitet den Apfel isst), aber wie in den zwei vorangegangenen Songs ebenfalls Schwere. Die Freiheit des Handelns ist nicht unbedingt leicht.

For me, freedom also resonates in this song (even if it is about how Eve eats the apple, guided by the snake), but as in the two previous songs, it is also heavy. The freedom of action is not necessarily easy.

14. Change – Big Thief
Ein schöner Songtext über die Akzeptanz von Veränderung, Vergänglichkeit und bleibende Liebe.

A beautiful song lyric about the acceptance of change, transience and lasting love.

15. Seventeen – Sharon Van Etten
War schon vor Vilnius eins meiner Lieblingslieder. Auf einen Hügel steigen und den Sonnenuntergang sehen, das habe ich mit 17 gemacht und mit diesem Lied auf den Ohren, als ich die Treppe zu den drei Kreuzen hochgestiegen bin.

It was one of my favourite songs even before Vilnius. Climbing a hill and watching the sunset, that’s what I did when I was 17 and with this song on my ears when I walked up the stairs to the Three Crosses.

16. Eine gute Nachricht – Danger Dan
Das Lied erinnert an die Endlichkeit, tröstet aber auch darüber hinweg. Manchmal habe ich daran gedacht, dass ich Zeit mit Menschen, die mir wichtig sind, verpasse, während ich im Ausland bin. Dabei hilft mir, was eine Freundin gesagt hat: Manchmal muss man sich an den großen Zeitablauf, das große Ganze erinnern. Es ist nur ein Jahr unter vielen.

The song reminds us of finitude, but also comforts us over it. Sometimes I have thought about missing time with people who are important to me while I am abroad. What a friend said helps me with that: Sometimes you have to remember the big time, the big picture. It’s just one year among many.

17. Gypsy – Fleetwood Mac
Als ich nachmittags für ein, zwei Stunden im Regionalpark Pavilniai spazieren ging, den Präriezaun passierte, hatte ich dieses Lied auf den Ohren und mein Gesicht sagte Freiheit mit ein bisschen Angst.

When I walked for an hour or two in the afternoon in the Pavilniai Regional Park, passed the prairie fence, I had this song on my ears and my face said freedom with a little fear.

18. Fix You – Naturally 7
Jemand hat mir das Lied geschickt, als ich in Quarantäne war. So wertvolle Unterstützung habe ich bekommen, danke noch mal.

Someone sent me the song when I was quarantined. Such valuable support I got, thank you again.

19. Stop Making This Hurt – Bleachers
Zu dem Song habe ich in Quarantäne getanzt. Der Inhalt ist ernst, es geht darum, aus schlechten Bedingungen auszubrechen, aber die Musik lässt das nicht erahnen und macht einfach nur gute Laune.

I danced to this song in quarantine. The content is serious, it’s about breaking out of bad conditions, but the music doesn’t hint at that and just puts you in a good mood.

20. Don’t Go Dark – Bleachers
Mit dem Lied ist es genauso – gute Laune trotz drohender Finsternis garantiert.

It’s the same with the song – good humour guaranteed despite impending gloom.

21. Northern Sky – Nick Drake
Das Lied habe ich gehört, als ich mich wahnsinnig auf jemanden gefreut habe (und auf die Nordlichter, die ich in Lappland sehen würde).

I heard the song when I was madly looking forward to seeing someone (and the northern lights I would see in Lapland).

22. Tower of Song – Leonard Cohen
Lief, als ich zum ersten Mal im Mint Vinetu war. Ich kannte das Lied vorher schon, fand es aber immer etwas langweilig. Seitdem ich es in dem Café gehört habe, mag ich es sehr viel mehr. Manchmal ist es mit Cafémusik wie mit Filmmusik.

It was playing the first time I went to Mint Vinetu. I knew the song before, but I always found it a bit boring. Since I heard it in the café, I like it much more. Sometimes it’s the same with café music as with film music.

23. The Ship in Port – Radical Face
Gehörte vor zwei, drei Jahren zu meinen Lieblingsliedern. Auch dazu habe ich vom Weggehen geträumt. Jetzt werde ich damit immer auch meine Reise über die baltische und skandinavische See nach Stockholm verbinden.

It was one of my favourite songs two or three years ago. I also dreamt of leaving to this song. Now I will always associate it with my journey across the Baltic and Scandinavian seas to Stockholm.

24. Fifteen Men On Deadman’s Chest – Salt Sea Pirates
Auf dem Pirates of the Baltic Sea Trip wurden wir aufgefordert, nur Lieder wie dieses zu singen. Mit Saxophon und E-Gitarre wurde es auf dem Schiff performt. Meine französische Mitbewohnerin hat es tatsächlich häufig gesummt.

On the Pirates of the Baltic Sea Trip we were asked to sing only songs like this. With saxophone and electric guitar, it was performed on the ship. My French flatmate actually hummed it a lot.

25. It’s ok – Imagine Dragons
Wieder ein Lied, das ich dank meiner Zimmergenossin entdeckt habe. Sie hat es in einem Moment gehört, in dem nicht alles okay war, aber damit war das okay.

Another song I discovered thanks to my roommate. She heard it at a moment when everything wasn’t okay, but that made it okay.

26. Chasing Cars (Piano Arrangement) – Dreams on Ivories
Die Melodie habe ich auf dem E-Piano in der Nationalbibliothek über den Dächern von Vilnius gespielt.

I played the melody on the electric piano in the National Library above the rooftops of Vilnius.

27. The Whole of the Moon – The Waterboys
Letztes Jahr, als ich um Weihnachten herum einen Monat krank war, hat mir dieses Lied Kraft gegeben. Jemand bleibt in seinem Zimmer und sieht trotzdem den ganzen Mond, während ein anderer durch die Welt zieht und nur die Sichel sieht. Jetzt bin ich es, der reist, ein regenschmutziges Tal sieht, anstatt mit Fantasie Brigadoon – und manchmal doch gefühlt the Whole of the Moon.

Last year, when I was sick for a month around Christmas, this song gave me strength. Someone stays in their room and still sees the whole moon, while someone else travels the world and only sees the crescent. Now it’s me who travels, sees a rain-dirty valley instead of Brigadoon with imagination – and sometimes still feels the Whole of the Moon.

28. The Whole of the Moon – Kirin J Callinan
Mit der neuen Bedeutung des Liedes habe ich nach einer neuen Version gesucht und das als bestes Cover gefunden.

With the new meaning of the song, I was looking for a new version and found this as the best cover.

29. Waterfalls – Death Cab for Cutie
Wasserfälle nicht zu jagen und sich an die Flüsse und Seen zu halten, die man gewohnt ist – ich weiß nicht, ob ich das eine gute Idee finde. Aber das Lied hat was und ich habe es häufiger gehört.

Not chasing waterfalls and sticking to the rivers and lakes you’re used to – I don’t know if I think that’s a good idea. But the song has something and I have heard it more often.

30. I Don’t Live Here Anymore – The War On Drugs
Erinnerungen an einen Ort, eine Vergangenheit, eine Person, die man verlassen, aber nicht hinter sich gelassen hat, während man sich unsicher ist, ob man das erreicht, was man will: Daran zu wachsen.

Memories of a place, a past, a person that you have left but not left behind, while you are unsure whether you are achieving what you want: to grow from it.

31. Cigarette Daydreams – Cage The Elephant
Das Lied erinnernt mich an Ende November, die ersten dicken Flocken, die kaltgrauen Male, die ich mich durch die Gediminas Avenue bewegt habe, von der Nationalbibliothek zu +++ und zurück. Meine Zimmergenossin hat es auch manchmal gehört.

The song reminds me of late November, the first thick flakes, the cold grey times I’ve moved through Gediminas Avenue, from the National Library to +++ and back. My roommate also heard it sometimes.

32. Archie, Marry Me – Alvvays
Spät im Semester entdeckt, aber es passt zu dem Buch, das ich am Anfang gelesen habe (und weiterempfehle!): In „Zähne zeigen“ von Zadie Smith wird ein Archie geheiratet.

Discovered late in the semester, but it fits with the book I read at the beginning (and recommend!): In „White Teeth“ by Zadie Smith, an Archie is married.

33. Hot & Heavy – Lucy Dacus
Seit ich das Lied vor etwa drei Wochen entdeckt habe, höre ich es jeden zweiten Tag.

Since I discovered the song about three weeks ago, I’ve been listening to it every second day.

34. A.M. RADIO – The Lumineers
Und dieses jeden dritten.

35. People Have the Power – Patti Smith
Meine Mutter hat mir das Lied geschickt. Sie schickt mir immer die besten Live-Versionen davon, die ich auf Spotify nicht finde. Das erste Mal vor etwa drei Jahren schickte sie mir dieses YouTube-Video. Und als sie mir vor Lappland eine gute Reise wünschte, dieses schöne.

My mother sent me the song. She always sends me the best live versions of it that I can’t find on Spotify. The first time, about three years ago, she sent me this YouTube video. And when she wished me a good trip before Lapland, this beautiful one.

36. Die wunderbare Reise des kleinen Nils Holgersson – Karel Svoboda
Wie Nils Holgersson bin ich nach Lappland gereist.

37. She Moves – Alle Farben, Graham Candy
Weit weg in einem Land, in dem die Sonne nicht aufgeht, ihre Augen versteckt, an dem Ort, an dem der Himmel aus Marmelade gemacht ist, bewegte ich mich, umgeben von bunten Lichter, und hörte dieses Lied.

Far away in a land where the sun will never rise, will hide its eyes, in the place with marmalade skies, I moved, surrounded by the coloured lights, listening to this song.

38. Du bist – Prinz Pi
Habe ich auf der Rückfahrt von Lappland hoch und runter gehört. „Du bist der Abspann vom Film und ich sitze noch da / Du bist besser, als du glaubst, auch wenn du es nicht magst“ und „Auch wenn dein Bus nie kommen wird, ich warte noch hier / Melancholie ist die Lederjacke meines Vereins / Ich trag sie, weil das Leder meine Zeilen beweist / Du bist das Logo meines Clubs, die Hymne der Guten / Die traurige, rauchige Stimme der Jugend / Der Sound der Nacht, Stille und Gebell von ei’m Hund / Besser Rebell ohne Grund als Rebell ohne Mund!“
