#22 Quarantänetagebuch / Quarantine diary

See below for the English version.

I Mittwoch, 13.10.2021

Vorhin piepte mein Handy: „Notfallbenachrichtigung: Extrem“. Der Text dahinter auf Litauisch. Ich hab einen Schreck bekommen. Bombenalarm?

„Oh God, we barely survived
Stop making this hurt
Just say goodbye like you mean it“

I Wednesday, 13.10.2021

After my morning shower, I opened the windows and sat down on the windowsill. A freshness between winter and autumn, morning and night flowed towards me. From now on, this is not only my desk, but also my balcony.

The view from the other window is not much different, although the room seems large to me:

A church was reflected in the right-hand window. Was it further out of sight on the right or could I see it at the other window? I went back to the left window and saw her for real:

At 9 o’clock there was the first knock and I could take my breakfast from the chair in front of the door.

Ham and cheese croissants. Not bad. Coffee is one of those things I just can’t have. The last time I tried it, a friend had to drink the latte I had totally sweetened, I couldn’t for the life of me. But maybe this time I would barely taste the coffee. Maybe coffee fuzzy actually tasted good. I sipped it and choked eerily. Whoever heard me cough at that moment must have been thinking of Corona. For a few seconds I thought I couldn’t breathe.

I got the number of a hospital (+37052342515) for medical consultation, registered there and a female doctor called back. She asked about my symptoms.
A bit of a cold, a bit less taste, every two hours….
Do you need to rest?
No, do I need to blow my nose.
The doctor announced that she would call again tomorrow and tell me the duration of my quarantine.

The Erasmus coordinator at Vilnius University sent me an email with a form to cover the costs. I filled it out and sent it back to her with the hotel bill.

At the Corona Warnapp, I requested a TAN to enter my positive result and warn others. The Lithuanian Warnapp and the German Warnapp exchange data. A few people are definitely a bit worried about me right now, especially those from the packed James Bond cinema last week Tuesday. Luckily I had the mask on the whole time.

Then it was time to get to work. Work and structure, like Wolfgang Herrndorf did. Good thing I have my master’s thesis. The feedback I recently received from my supervisor calls for a lot of revision, a lot of structure.

The fixed meal times provide structure. Lunch is at 1 pm, dinner at 6 pm.

Lunch: Goulash soup, apple and biscuits. The soup must have been strongly spiced, I tasted it well. And I tasted cinnamon from the biscuits.

Dinner: Pasta salad and trail mix.

After 6pm I do something nice. Reading Harry Potter, socialising, watching Netflix. Writing a blog.

II Thursday, 14.10.2021

Time passes more quickly in quarantine. It felt like two hours between breakfast and lunch, and three and a half between lunch and dinner.

Croissants again, this time with tomato-mozzarella.

This is the second time this month that I’ve had carrot juice. Seems to be in in Lithuania.

I never eat bananas in the evening. Bananas are a typical breakfast for me.

The soup did me good. I get all the nutrients I might have been lacking in the last month and a half. Don’t have to cook and instead can work without long interruptions. The portions look small, but they are not. I woke up this morning with a full belly. Hopefully we won’t have croissants again tomorrow. Two spectacles took place outside my window today:

Rainbow.

Hot air balloons. Much bigger than they look here.

The doctor called again and asked if I was coughing. I said yes, unfortunately (although I’m not coughing much more than usual). Now she’ll call again tomorrow and hopefully say something about the duration of quarantine.

III Friday, 15.10.2021

I never thought I would photograph every meal, but they have become the special charms of everyday life, surprises that I am always happy about. This morning there was another brown paper bag next to rice – and today there was a little cake in it. And: I think I tasted some of the chocolate icing on the bottom! But the appetite for chocolate has not yet returned. My theory is that both the part of the brain responsible for tasting chocolate and the part where chocolate is represented are affected. Maybe it’s a common area, I didn’t pay enough attention in perception psychology, forgot about it again or it wasn’t mentioned (there was a common lecture for smelling and tasting, while seeing was covered in about ten lectures, hearing in two and touch in one of its own).

Breakfast. The hotel forgot again that I don’t drink coffee. I tried it again, just to taste that I was still alive. It worked.

This could also be a monastery, but I’m afraid I’m not a monk who knows how to meditate on an apple in the evening. I changed the heating, so the room is less warm overall, but at the windowsill, where I sit most of the time, it’s like a fireplace (it’s still chilly at the shins, but I have two duvets in case of need):

Heating.

11:30 a.m. The „doctor“, who turned out to be a doctor’s assistant, just called and said that today is the last day of quarantine (10 days after the onset of symptoms). Then I asked what was going on with the hotel that had already been booked and paid for by the university, how I was going to get out, whether she could send me the document certifying that the isolation had ended. And the receptionist spoke to the doctor for a minute. Back on the phone, she said that, just to be on the safe side, the doctor thought it would be a good idea to keep me in quarantine for 10 days since the test (until 21.10.). She said she would call again on Monday to find out how I could get my driving licence. I can pick up the digital Covid certificate from the EU, which confirms my recovery, for 31 euros at the clinic, but I don’t know if it’s worth it. I already have one because of my vaccination and in six months I will definitely have another vaccination. I’m so glad to have had some antibodies already. But I could have been free. The only thing that helps is to look on the bright side: Here I get free, good food and have a place to rest, a clean bathroom – and something like my own desk.

IIIII Sunday, 17.10.2021

Yesterday I couldn’t get to the laptop and write. I lay in bed all day and in between tried with difficulty to do some exercises against the back pain. Either it was the virus or the salmon quiche the day before. Anyway, it’s over with food photos. I choked several times, but nothing came. I haven’t really thrown up since sixth grade. I’m still a bit nauseous and dizzy, I’ve lost water but have been well fed with banana, rusk, mineral water, cola and plain rice. I am feeling better already. When the body is struggling with something, at least it doesn’t get boring. Now it’s back to work and structure.

IIIIII Monday, 18.10.2021

This morning I got a piece of dark chocolate and tasted the chocolate. Later, though, also a piece of mango and it didn’t taste as bad as mango usually tastes to me. And a piece of cheese, a mixture of goat cheese and mozzarella, quite a lot of it, but it didn’t taste greasy and unhealthy like all cheese actually tastes.

And for the life of me, I can’t lie in this bed during the day anymore. Sitting at a desk is less frustrating, but even that hurts. Despairing about the Master’s thesis is better than despairing about quarantine. Feeling stupid is better than feeling sick. Cognitive abilities diminish with physical ones, but focusing on the physical gives me anxiety, while forgetting could help me feel more serene. This week I forgot two online courses at once (this has never happened to me before). It’s happened before that I didn’t get around to writing to a friend on Sundays, but I was always aware of it. Yesterday I didn’t think about it for a second. And I missed a meeting with a writing group Friday night that I had signed up for two days before (it came back to me yesterday).

The last two nights I’ve been sweating profusely at night, so I hope that’s over soon. Does anyone know of any books written in captivity? I know „The Monstrous Room“ by E.E. Cummings, but unfortunately don’t have it with me. Someone also recommended the Schachnovelle by Stefan Zweig to me. Maybe I’ll research it tomorrow…

IIIIIII Tuesday, 19.10.2021

The moon has risen, the hot air balloons are up.

IIIIIIII Wednesday, 20.10.2021

Last day of quarantine. I have just finalised the second version of my Master’s thesis. Then I threw the clothes into the suitcase. I’m fine again. „Stop Making This Hurt“ by the Bleachers. Quarantine disco with headphones. Roulades for lunch, cake for supper. Where are the fireworks I’ve heard so many evenings?

Earlier my mobile beeped: „Emergency notification: Extreme“. The text behind it in Lithuanian. I got a fright. Bomb scare? Then the translation: „Very windy weather is expected on 21-22 October. Please take care of your safety and the safety of your relatives.“ I have no relatives here. Uncertainty waits outside.

„Oh God, we barely survived
Stop making this hurt
Just say goodbye like you mean it“

Tomorrow someone lands for me like fate – probably not gently.
